    Adaptation Strategies for Automated Machine Learning on Evolving Data

    Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) systems have been shown to efficiently build good models for new datasets. However, it is often not clear how well they can adapt when the data evolves over time. The main goal of this study is to understand the effect of data stream challenges such as concept drift on the performance of AutoML methods, and which adaptation strategies can be employed to make them more robust. To that end, we propose 6 concept drift adaptation strategies and evaluate their effectiveness on different AutoML approaches. We do this for a variety of AutoML approaches for building machine learning pipelines, including those that leverage Bayesian optimization, genetic programming, and random search with automated stacking. These are evaluated empirically on real-world and synthetic data streams with different types of concept drift.     The Determinants of Banks’ Capital Adequacy Ratio: Some Evidence from South Eastern European Countries

    The legal authorities set the minimum capital level for the banks. Recent studies have shown that variables used to explain capital structure of non financial firms, such as size, profit, leverage, liquidity and risk, could also be helpful in understanding banks’ capital structure. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of bank-dimensional and environmental factors on bank’s capital adequacy ratio in South Eastern European (SEE) region. Size, profitability (ROA), leverage, liquidity, net interest margin (NIM), and risk are used as bank-dimensional explanatory variables in a feasible GLS regression model. On the other hand, economic growth rate, inflation, real interest rate, Eurozone stock market volatility index, deposit insurance coverage, and governance indicator are added to the original model to control for environmental factors. Annual data from 71 commercial banks belong to 10 different countries in SEE region for the period of 2007 – 2012 is used. This region mainly consists of the “transition economies†which are still experiencing the difficulties of turning into efficient market economies with high economic potentials. The results of our study show that among the bank dimensional explanatory variables size, ROA, leverage, liquidity, net interest margin and risk have statistically significant effects in determining CAR for the banks in the region. Among the environmental factors, economic growth rate, Eurozone stock market volatility index, deposit insurance coverage, and governance have statistically significant effects in determining CAR for the banks in the SEE region

    A Comparative Analysis of the National Cyber Security Strategies of Leading Nations

    The rapid pace of technological developments in the area of information and communications technologies caused nations and peoples to be more reliant on cyber infrastructure to survive. Besides opportunities, the widespread use of information technology introduces new threats as well. Risks related to cyber security have started to threaten critical infrastructures, which are defined as assets that are essential for the functioning of a society and its economy. Cyber security has become one of the most serious national security concerns. In 2003 the United States was the first nation to prepare and publish a national cyber security strategy In the last ten years, 35 other nations have subsequently published their national cyber security strategy document. There are several aspects for national cyber security strategies. According to Luiijif and Healey (2012), there are five mandates of national cyber security: 1) Military cyber operations, 2) Counter cybercrime, 3) Intelligence/Counter intelligence, 4) Cyber security crisis management and critical infrastructure protection and 5) Internet governance and cyber diplomacy. In this study, the national cyber security strategies of France, Germany, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States and Turkey are examined and compared. Correlations between specific properties of the nation (economic power and political situation etc.) and focus and content of its cyber strategy were examined. The results of the study will provide guidance for nations that plan to prepare or update a national cyber security strategy

    The Mediating Role of Emotion Lability and Emotion Regulation in The Relationship Between Social-Emotional Adaptation with Behavior Regulation and Social Skills Among Preschool Children

    Self-regulation is defined as an individual's ability to control and regulate their own behavior; this skill, forming the foundation of social adjustment, influences one's ability to interact with their environment and manage relationships. Emotion regulation, on the other hand, involves the ability to manage emotional responses and is believed to establish a critical connection between social adjustment and self-regulation. In this study, the aim is to determine the mediating role of emotion regulation in the relationship between behavioral regulation, social skills, and social-emotional adjustment skills using two different models.The study included a total of 216 children aged 5 and 6. Data were collected using the Socio-Demographic Information Form, Emotion Regulation Scale (ERS), Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS), and Marmara Social-Emotional Adaptation Scale (MSEAS). When socio-demographic variables were evaluated in terms of social competence and social-emotional adjustment scores according to gender, significant differences were found in favor of girls. Significant differences were also found in favor of children with working mothers when evaluated based on the mother's employment status. There were moderate significant correlations found between emotion regulation, child behavior assessment, and social-emotional adjustment. According to the mediation analyses, there was a partial mediating effect of emotion variability/negativity and emotion regulation in the relationship between behavior regulation and social-emotional adjustment. Similarly, there was a partial mediating effect of emotion variability/negativity and emotion regulation in the relationship between social competence and social-emotional adjustment. It is thought that the finding that children's emotion regulation and emotion variability/negativity mediate the relationship between social-emotional adjustment, social competence, and behavior regulation will contribute to the literature

    Development of an optimum proliferation medium via the graph kernel statistical analysis method for genetically stable in vitro propagation of endemic Thymus cilicicus (Turkey)

    Thymus cilicicus is an endemic Eastern Mediterranean element that has aromatic-medicinal properties. Its natural population spreads across gravelly ground and open rocky areas of South and Southwest Anatolia. The current study on in vitro propagation of T. cilicicus focused deeply on environmental applications such as the development of an optimum medium composition for efficient and genetically stable micropropagation and improved preservation procedures for long-time conservation of elite germplasms for further studies. For this purpose, MS and OM media were used individually and in combination with cytokinins, charcoal, AgNO3, Fe-EDDHA, and H3BO3. The raw data were statistically analyzed via the graph kernel method to optimize the nonlinear relationship between all parameters. The optimal proliferation medium for T. cilicicus was OM supplemented with a combination of 10 g L-1 charcoal and 1 mg L-1 KIN and the calculated averages of the best regeneration rate, the best shoot number and the best shoot length were 96.89%, 3 and 1.24 respectively on this medium. The determination of genetic stability of in vitro grown plants on the optimum medium compositions obtained by the graph kernel method was carried out with the use of the ISSR-PCR technique. All the ISSR primers produced a total of 192 reproductive band profiles, none of which were polymorphic. Furthermore, the micropropagated plants were successfully rooted and acclimatized to greenhouse conditions. In this study, we present a graph kernel multiple propagation index which considers all the possible parameters needing to be analyzed. Such an index is used for the first time for the determination of the optimum proliferation medium

However, there are still challenges with how sustainability is communicated to occupants and owners of buildings. As the global economic crisis is continuing, the marketing of green buildings needs to be refined to communicate the lifetime benefits of sustainability. One of the ways to develop effective marketing strategies, is to understand what the occupants value the most among many aspects of green buildings thus develop focused marketing solutions. Authors present a conceptual methodology using Analytic Hierarchy Process toward identifying consumer ranking and weights of a major green building rating system’s categories.
